PostSecret

Read about this site in the Daily Tar Heel. People send in postcards with secrets they've never told anyone. Interesting stuff.

Joe Strummer, Terrorist? (The Nation)

It really did feel like 'London Calling' when I opened my e-mail April 5 to find an inbox clogged with a score of messages titled: 'Man Held as Terrorism Suspect Over Punk Song.' This was not spam but a news item from Reuters reporting that Harraj Mann had been detained for questioning by British anti-terrorism detectives after they received a phone call from a taxi driver who had taken Mann to the Durham Tees Valley Airport. The driver became alarmed after hearing Mann, a mobile phone salesman of Indian descent, sing along to the Clash's 'London Calling.' The lyric that triggered the cabbie's concern: 'Now war is declared--and battle come down...a meltdown expected.'

How did I not discover The Clash until I was 24? The rest of the article is great--if you're into political music.

colin hay / poli sci dictionary

I saw Colin Hay last night. He was very good. Katie supervised the tech crew. Annie is jealous that I got to see him.

Writing my stats paper, Word keeps putting red wavy lines under words it doesn't know that are real words. Or at least they appear in published Poli Sci articles and books. So I keep having to double check that I have them right and then add them to my dictionary. I wish there was a Poli Sci custom dictionary one could add all at once...

What Would Jesus Say About war?

Part good series of pieces by pastors--this one links to the others. A Jewish friend wanted to know why there are so many right-wing Christians, given this sampling of opinion...

He concludes:

...I'm not sure Jesus would say anything.

I think he'd just weep.

I think he's weeping now.

BooYahoo!

A site dedicated to organizing a boycott of Yahoo! When I get around to forwarding all my old emails (sometime this summer) I'll join it. Not sure how much good it'll do but it's better than nothing.

new photo site

Having ditched Flickr, I've gotten around to setting up a site at 23hq.com to share photos. All the photos mentioned in the recent posts below will be there. I'll eventually edit those posts to reflect that.
